London has another world record to its name – thanks to super sleuth Sherlock Holmes.

The master detective has been officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the most portrayed literary human character in film and television.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s creation has been depicted on screen 254 times since his creation in 1887.

That is 48 times more than the next contender - Hamlet.

The first known appearance of the famous consulting detective on screen is believed to be Sherlock Holmes Baffled, a 30-second silent movie made in the United States in the 1890s.

Since then, more than 75 actors have donned the deer stalker and gone out into the London fog from Baker Street to fight crime.

World records adjudicator Claire Burgess said: “Sherlock Holmes is a literary institution. This Guinness World Records title reflects his enduring appeal and demonstrates that his detective talents are as compelling today as they were 125 years ago.”

The record is part of World Record London - a campaign by promotional group London and Partners to get the capital more than 20 Guinness World Records in the run-up to the Olympics.
