Meet the incredible Lighthouse Man – the man who had a guiding light in his head, literally.

In 1923 Robert Ripley, the founder of Ripley’s Believe It or Not, came across this street guide in Chungking, China.

The man had a hole drilled in his head into which he put a lit candle in order to give night tours of the city’s dark neighbourhoods.

It’s undoubtedly a novel way to get around at night-time but London24 would not recommend it for anyone thinking of saving the cost of a new lamp for reading before bed!

The Lighthouse Man exhibit features at the Ripley’s Believe It or Not attraction at London’s Piccadilly Circus.

It’s included here as one of the top 10 weirdest Ripley’s London exhibits as chosen by London24 editor Simon Bull. This is number three on the list.
