In a scene like something out of a science-fiction or disaster movie, an incident team arrived almost immediately to cordon off the meteorite and keep the public at a safe distance.

No-one was injured in the incident.

Some questioned whether aliens were about to land, while others filmed the incident on their mobile phone and took to the internet to report their sightings on social networks.

The incident was in fact a stunt by Eden TV to launch its Science Month which begins on Sunday.

Shows including Wonders of the Universe, Finding Life Beyond Earth, The Code and Deadliest Volcano will be shown.
