We have reached number one in our countdown of the weirdest things on show at Ripley’s Believe It or Not in London.
If you’ve seen anything stranger than these shrunken heads then you have clearly seen some very bizarre things in your lifetime – and you might need to seek help!
The Jivaro people of the Andes practice ‘tsanta’, the ancient art of shrinking human heads as war trophies.
Shrinking one was believed to enslave the enemy‛s spirit. Toucan feather earrings and ornaments often adorned them.
The shrinking of a head was accompanied by a ritual, culminating in a victory celebrated by the entire community.
Those they are rather creepy and unsettling, albeit fascinating, the extreme rarity makes these relics the crown jewels of the Ripley collection. They are among the finest shrunken head specimens in the world.
