A busy Crouch End road has been blocked off by police after “masonry” began falling from a Victorian building.
The emergency services were called to Topsfield Parade, Tottenham Lane, at about 4.30pm today after bits of one of the 1895 buildings began falling from the roof to the ground below.
The road was quickly blocked off while firefighters began to secure the building, which is understood to house bookmakers Ladbrookes on the ground floor. A surveyor has also been called to the scene.
It is understood Tottenham Lane is currently closed at Crouch End Broadway, while bus routes 41 and 91 have been diverted onto Middle Lane.
Crouch End councillor David Winskill said: “These occurrences are thankfully quite rare but I think it is time Haringey wrote to freeholders asking them to look to see what kind of state the masonry above pavements is and do any repair works necessary.”
