More than 90 people attended a stroke awareness event with a distinctly Olympian theme.

They were treated to “Chariots of Fire - a Spectacular in Song” to help connect the event to the Olympics and Paralympics. Many wore glamorous costumes in the colours of the Olympic rings and sang music from five participating continents.

It was organised by the Newham Stroke Club at the Katherine Road Community Centre, in Katherine Road, Forest Gate.

Songs from a variety of musicals, light operetta and a version of Chariots of Fire with lyrics were written and performed by Maria Arakie (soprano) , Glenn Wilson (baritone) and Carol Wells a top rate pianist.

Abdul Shakoor, from the club said their performances were particulalrly enjoyed by stroke survivors with disabilities as many are unable to go out to the theatre.

On the same event Diabetes UK, Newham Diabetes Community Champion also ran a stand at which they assessed attendees to meaure their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
