The strike, by Transport Union RMT, could have put the London bike hire scheme out of action on a day when an estimated 80,000 will be travelling to Stratford for the opening ceremony.

“It is the unanimous view of our representatives on the London Boris Bikes that we should suspend the action due to start tomorrow to allow our members a chance to meet to discuss future strategy,” said RMT General Secretary Bob Crow.

“As a result of RMT’s industrial campaign Serco Barclay’s have come forward with a substantially improved Olympics recognition and reward offer.

“RMT’s dispute with the company remains on and our executive will consider further industrial action and campaigning activities following the members meeting aimed at securing improved pay and conditions for this group of key London transport staff.”
