Services were suspended from 7am for three hours between Liverpool Street and Woodford, leaving passengers stranded at Bethnal Green, Mile End and Stratford.

A driver reported smelling smoke on a train as it pulled into Leyton, one stop north of Stratford.

“All passengers left the train and station without reported problems,” said a TfL spokesman. “The Central was suspended between Woodford, Newbury Park and Liverpool Street in both directions when the train was taken out of service.”

Passengers heading to Stratford for the Olympics had to switch to the already congested Jubilee Line. The Central did not resume until 10am, but running with severe delays.
