London Cycling Campaign’s Big Ride sends ‘Go Dutch’ safety message

Cyclists are today taking part in the Big Ride in central London to send a message to mayoral candidates that the capital needs safer streets for people to ride their bikes.

This four-mile traffic-free ride, for which roads have been closed, was organised by London Cycling Campaign.

The campaign’s chief executive Ashok Sinha said: “The Big Ride is our best chance to show the next mayor we’re serious about redesigning our streets to make them safer for everyone.

“Some of the mayoral manifestos show very weak commitments to cycling, so every person who comes to the Big Ride can help push safer cycling up the next mayoral agenda.”

Around 40 guided rides brought people to the event from all over London.

Participants were encouraged to dress themselves and their bikes in red and white and to bring music, bells and whistles to create a carnival atmosphere.

The ride met on Park Lane and will pass many of London’s most famous landmarks such as Hyde Park Corner, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square.

It is due to end on the Victoria Embankment at 2pm.

The Big Ride supports LCC’s Love London, Go Dutch campaign, which calls on the mayoral candidates to make the city’s streets as safe and inviting for cycling as they are in Holland.
