Excitement is building in anticipation of the 2012 Olympic Games later this summer but many Londoners are also bracing themselves for upheaval to their daily commute.

With the rail and Tube network expected to be bursting with tourists, and with road closures scheduled to allow athletes and dignitaries to get around London quickly, many people will be looking for alternatives ways of getting to work throughout the summer.

Scooters and motorcycles might just be the answer.

There are a whole host of benefits to taking to two wheels, and with national Ride To Work Day on June 18, now could be the perfect time to consider getting on two wheels for the daily commute.

Did you know?

Motorcycles and scooters are completely exempt from the central London congestion charge.

Parking in designated Bike Park bays in central London costs just £1 per day for motorcycles.

Motorcycles and scooters are much “greener” than most cars – some scooters can do more than 100mpg.

Competition

To encourage London bikers to get out and show support for National Ride To Work Day, we’ve teamed up with German tyre manufacturer Metzeler to give one lucky winner a set of motorcycle tyres of their choice.

Metzeler is a premium tyre manufacturer with an extensive product range to satisfy every rider, covering superbike, tourer, commuter, naked, adventure, cruiser, scooter and off-road machines.

Two runners-up will each receive a pair of paddock passes to a British Superbike round of their choice, where the Metzeler National Superstock series does battle at each exciting event.

Bike review

Kawasaki's new Versys 1000 is a great all-round bike for the London commute.

Its relaxed upright riding position gives a commanding view of the road, and the wide handlebars and generous steering lock make it a doddle to pick a route through traffic.

The powerful 1043cc engine ensures that getting away from traffic lights or nipping past slower vehicles can be done quickly and safely, and the higher ratio top gears mean that cruising at motorway speeds is comfortable and smooth.

The Versys 1000 has a wide padded and contoured seat to make longer journeys comfortable, and Kawasaki designers have clearly extended the same consideration to the pillion seat too.

Although it's a big bike, the Kawasaki Versys 1000 offers good fuel economy of 45mpg - 55mpg depending on riding style and conditions.

Add in the benefits of cheap and plentiful parking for bikes and the absence of congestion charges for all two-wheelers, and next week's Ride to Work Day is the perfect time to think about getting into biking.
