Transport for London last week started its consultation into plans to build a tunnel, and a ferry service to Gallions Reach, by the end of the decade.

But the London Mayor has yet to confirm how the new services will be paid for if planning permission is granted. Fears have grown that drivers using the new tunnel, or the existing Blackwall Tunnel, will be charged to help cover the cost of construction.

When asked about this by London Assembly member Darren Johnson (Green Party), Mr Johnson said: “There are a number of potential funding mechanisms for the crossing.

“Further work will be undertaken in conjunction with the Government on funding options.”
