Update: A man is recovering after being hit by a falling piece of metal at Westfield Stratford City this afternoon.

A man is recovering in hospital after he was hit by a falling piece of metal at Westfield Stratford City shopping complex this afternoon.

Police and paramedics attended the scene at around 3.20pm outside the North Ticket Hall on the ground floor.

It is understood the man aged around 38, was struck by the metal, measuring approximately 20ft by 10ft, which came away from its hoarding.

He was taken to The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel with leg injuries.

Health and Safety officials have been called in to investigate the incident. Scotland Yard confirmed police and paramedics attended the incdient.

Police have cordoned off the area.

A spokeswoman for Westfield Stratford City said: “A temporary panel has come away from part of a building at Westfield Stratford City resulting in the injury of a gentleman.

“The Westfield Stratford City security team managed the situation and the emergency services arrived on the scene promptly. The gentleman has been taken to hospital for medical review and Westfield’s sincere thoughts are with the gentleman and his family at this time.”

Westfield has informed the Health and Safety Executive and is assisting with their inquiry.

The spokeswoman added: “The temporary panels were in place as part of routine maintenance work. The area has been cordoned off until the site is investigated and all temporary panels are removed.”
