A woman who was involved in an accident with a van that failed to stop has died in hospital.

Scotland Yard have that the young woman has passed away at The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel four days after the incident.

The accident happened on Saturday shortly after midnight.

Police were called at 12.15am on Saturday June 23 following reports of a serious road traffic accident involving a white van and a female pedestrian in Silvertown Way, Canning Town.

Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and the 27-year-old woman was taken to Newham General Hospital, suffering with serious head injuries. She was transferred to The Royal London where she died from her injuries on Tuesday.

Police said the victim was crossing the road, just opposite Canning Town Bus terminus, when she was in collision with a white van travelling south along Silvertown Way. She was using the pedestrian crossing at the time. The driver of the van failed to stop at the scene.

A white van was subsequently recovered abandoned nearby.

On Sunday a man voluntarily attended Forest Gate Police station and was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of a collision and dangerous driving. He was bailed to return on a date in July pending further enquiries.

Witnesses are asked to call the Road Death Investigation Unit based at Chadwell Heath on (020) 8597 4874.
