Two people are to appear in court today over alleged Twitter abuse directed at feminist campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez.

Isabella Sorley, 23, from Newcastle, and John Nimmo, 25, from South Shields, have been charged with improper use of a communications network under Section 127 of the Communications Act.

The pair are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court.

Ms Criado-Perez, who was behind a successful bid to get Jane Austen on the Bank of England’s new £10 note, was allegedly sent offensive messages on the social network following the campaign.
