Although Arsene Wenger concedes his side were not at their best

Arsene Wenger rued the missed chances of Robin Van Persie and claimed his side should have had a penalty as Arsenal drew 0-0 at the Emirates against west Londoners Chelsea.

“It was a very unfair result,” said the Frenchman. “It was a bit of a strange game. I thought hey needed to win as did us.

“They only wanted to attack on the counter.

“We should have had a penalty (when Gary Cahill pushed I’ve Robin Van Persie).”

Wenger admitted hat his team did not perform as well as they could.

“We were not as technical as we wanted to be,” he added.

“We were similar to how we played against Wigan (when Arsenal lost a home 1-2).

“We did not open them up enough, that was my one regret from this game.

“I think they wanted some practice ahead of their Champions League match against Barcelona on Tuesday - they had three defensive midfielders playing.

“But we played with the handbrake on, we were nervous.

“We knew we could not afford to lose okay, we did not pass the ball well enough and we did not show enough change of pace in our game.”

While Wenger was unhappy with the result he was delighted with his skipper’s individual performance.

“Robin Van Persie gave me everything,” said Wenger.

“And e was unlucky not to score.. it was his 50 the game f the season.

“He rushed one chance , but it was not easy for him as at times he was alone up front and did not have enough support.

“I also think he should have had a penalty with 10 minutes to go - but we have not had a penalty at home all season,”
