Wojciech Szczesny was not training for the last five weeks of the season
Arsenal star Wojciech Szczesny has revealed that he risked his participation at Euro 2012 to help the Gunners reach the Champions League.
The Poland international had a shoulder injury that was threatening his involvement but he looked to play through the pain barrier.
“The last five weeks I wasn’t training – I only went to the physio Monday to Friday, then took some painkillers on Saturday,” Szczesny said. “The warm-up 45 minutes before the game was my only training.
“It might’ve been a risk that I was playing but there’s always a risk something happens – even when you’re okay.
“I wasn’t thinking about the possibility that I could miss the Euros because, after all, Arsenal are paying me to play football. And at least I helped the team get to the Champions League.”
Szczesny also had a dig at Tottenham by admitting he was supporting Chelsea in the Champions League final.
“I was supporting Chelsea in the final but only for the reason that if they won, it would mean that Tottenham would be without the Champions League next season.”
Chelsea won the title, therefore sending Spurs into the Europa League.
