“He’s got what he wanted. He’s a winner. And he’s got a lump of metal in his grubby little mitts to prove it.”
“I hope they are watching me now collecting my Premier League winner’s medal. I believe they have not won a trophy for many years now.
“I now hope the Arsenal fans can get on with their lives and forget me, they should celebrate their third-place achievement and I will focus on winning titles.”
Phew, stinging stuff.
Thing is, he may have all the grace of a charging elephant, but Samir Nasri has a point.
He’s got what he wanted. He’s a winner. And he’s got a lump of metal in his grubby little mitts to prove it. Sucks doesn’t it. But he’s been proved right.
It’s now seven years and counting. Seven years. St Totteringham’s Day and more Champions League is all very nice, but it’s simply not enough.
We need silver for our brass.
Not so long ago, you’d have been hard pushed to talk of a player who left Arsenal to go onto bigger and better things. Liam Brady, of course. Ray Kennedy, certainly. But that was more than 30 years ago in Chippy’s case. Nearly 40 for Kennedy.
Now they’re all at it. Half the City squad and backroom team seemed to have Highbury connections.
All have been proved right. They needed to leave Arsenal to become winners. Gael Clichy, mistake-strewn, unmotivated, Gael Clichy, is a winner. He’s now a mistake-free, motivated, Gael Clichy.
And he’s a winner.
This all started with Ashley Cole.
He won two titles and three FA Cups at Highbury. He’s already bettered that at Chelsea. Comfortably. He could, God forbid, win the Champions League on Saturday too. An unedifying prospect, I’m sure you’ll agree.
Loathe him or hate him, he can look any Arsenal fan in the eye and justify what he did. And we haven’t got a leg to stand on.
Meanwhile all we have is another trite interview with flaky Theo Walcott telling us how we must improve next season. Stop the world I want to get off.
So we need to win trophies. The club really needs to show that it means business (and I don’t just mean to the bottom line). This is all getting rather tiresome. We don’t go down the boozer to brag about our sustainable financial model.
We are The Arsenal. And I believe we are reaching a tipping point. Sort the defence out by giving Steve Bould the remit to whatever he has to do, offload half a dozen leeches sucking bloated salaries out of the club and buy some proven winners.
And a damned good start would be snaring wantaway Yaya Toure from Citeh, a man with unfinished business at our club.
Because the ‘trophy’ of Champions League football ain’t cutting it any more.
Before I go for a liedown in a darkened room to watch DVDs of past glories, I’ll leave with you another quote, from another ex-Gunner
“Winners smile, losers make their own arrangements.” - Mr Charles Frederick George.
And he knew a thing or two about winning…
