Arsenal legend Ian Wright picked out Jermain Defoe and Danny Welbeck for praise after England’s lacklustre 1-1 draw against Ukraine.

Tottenham striker Defoe had a goal controversially disallowed on a bad night for England at Wembley before a late Frank Lampard penalty saved them a point.

Former England and Arsenal man Wright thought England’s bright forwards were the only reason to feel positive.

“Jermain Defoe worked hard and his disallowed goal should have stood while Danny Welbeck posed a threat when he came on but, other than that, we were poor,” he told The Sun.

“Gerrard played well in the first half but the Three Lions skipper faded after the break and Frank Lampard was closed down.

“Big things were expected of Tom Cleverley after his classy display against Moldova but he failed to live up to his billing.”
