Liverpool winger Stewart Downing has admitted that Arsenal star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will push him all the way for an England starting spot at Euro 2012.

The 18-year-old Gunner scored four times in 15 games and also assisted in two goals, while the Reds winger failed to find the target or set up a goal.

And Downing, who was selected the left against Norway, believes that Oxlade-Chamberlain will provide a strong threat to his place.

“I think we saw a glimpse of his talent at the weekend,” Downing told reporters.

“He’s an exciting player, who can run with the ball and it is good competition for me.

“He keeps me on my toes and whoever the manager decides to go with then we’ll just have to keep fighting for our place.”
