Who has been the Gunners’ standout perfomrer?
Mikel Arteta
The Spanish midfielder was seen by some as a panic buy when signed from Everton on deadline day in August, but as the season progressed he became more and more vital to the Gunners. His experience came to the fore and he also chipped in with some vital - and spectacular - goals. A knee injury in April ruled him out of the last five games and he was sorely missed.
Laurent Koscielny
It was perhaps fitting that the no-nonsense French defender scored the goal that sealed third place at The Hawthorns on the final day, because for many he was the consistent rock of this side and emerged as one of the leading central defenders in the Premier League in only his second season at the club, form that earned him international recognition with France.
Alex Song
With no Jack Wilshere or Abou Diaby, it was left to Song to anchor the midfield for much of the season and he did not disappoint with his trademark tireless displays. Also showed he is not just a holding player by getting forward often and his chipped passes for Van Persie to finish became a feature of the season.
Robin van Persie
The Dutchman ended the previous season in deadly form, and just carried on where he left off. By the time he scored two against Norwich in May he had scored 37 goals in total for the Gunners and 30 in the Premier League to scoop the Golden Boot to go with his PFA and Football Writers’ Player of the Year double. A stellar campaign and his future is Arsenal’s key decision of the summer.
Theo Walcott
An injury-free season, 11 goals and assists galore was the kind of input Arsene Wenger has wanted from the England winger for the past five years. Finally he delivered, and his two goals in the 5-2 win over Spurs in February were arguably the most crucial goals of the campaign.
