Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has revealed that Spurs are closing in on Jan Vertonghen but a deal is not done yet.

Arsenal were in the hunt for the player but the Ajax star opted to move to White Hart Lane instead and his future manager believes he has numerous qualities.

“Jan’s a terrific passer and versatile too,” Redknapp revealed.

“He can play at the heart of defence but also plays very comfortably at left-back.

“I hope a deal is done but I don’t think it’s quite finished yet.”

Vertonghen insists the lack of Champions League football at White Hart Lane will not deter him from making the move to north London.

“It is not that big a problem,” the defender. “It would be nice but I chose for the club not just one season.

“For me it is important the connection with the club. They give me a very good feeling about everything.

“They invited me over and they also really want to close a deal, which is what gave me a good feeling.

“They showed me everything about where they want to be in the next few years and that is what I like most.”
