Jessica Ennis-Hill finished eighth in the long jump at the Anniversary Games as Blackheath and Bromley athlete Lorraine Ugen came third and fellow Brit Katarina Johnson-Thompson took first place.

London 2012 Olympic hero Ennis-Hill finished last with a leap of 6.16m, but she will be delighted that there was no adverse reaction to her Achilles injury ahead of next month’s World Championships in Moscow.

Londoner Ugen fared better than Ennis-Hill, as her 6.44m leap put her just behind second-placed Bianca Stuart from the Bahamas, while Johnson-Thompson took first place by a whisker.

Ennis-Hill said: “It’s amazing to be back in the stadium and just having everyone’s support is incredible. I’m just disappointed that I’m not in the shape and the fitness that I need to be in. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to be back here again though.

“It’s hard because obviously it’s only a couple of weeks until the worlds. I’m running out of time a bit.

“It’s brilliant to be back here again and remember all those memories from last year again.

“I haven’t decided about the world championships yet. I need to speak to my coach and have a think.”

But the day belonged to fellow heptathlete Johnson-Thompson who said: “It’s only my second Diamond League appearance. My first one was in the indoors so it’s great to do well.

“Long jump’s my best event and this place is my favourite track to compete at. It feels exactly the same as last year, just not the same pressure because I’ve just got the long jump.

“I feel like I just need to build up to more competitions like this and compete on the world scene.

“For Moscow I just want to be consistent in each event. I’m not looking to set the world alight but hopefully I can have a good run.”
