Adam Gemili beamed with virtual disbelief when he crossed the finish line in a personal best time to clinch gold at the World Junior Championships in Barcelona last night.

The Barking & Dagenham College student, who will represent Great Britain in the 100 metres at London 2012, always earmarked this meeting as his main focus of the year.

And despite the Olympic Games being little more than two weeks away the 18-year-old stuck to his word and produced an astonishing performance to sprint clear of the field and clock 10.05 seconds – a lifetime best and new Championship record.

Gemili tweeted: “Finding it hard to put into words how I’m feeling right now. Thank you to everyone for the support they have given me for the whole year.

“Literally the happiest guy in the world right now. Months of hard work have paid off and I’m now World Junior Champion!”
