STRONG headwinds in the last mile slowed runners in the Howe Street 5-mile road race on Friday evening.

The annual event, hosted by Springfield Striders, finished at The Green Man where race numbers could be exchanged for burgers.

More than 160 competitors braved the weather, including 17 taking part in Grange Farm and Dunmow Runners’ (GFDR) second championship race of the year. The race was won by Springfield Striders’ Mark Newton in 26 min 36secs.

For GFDR, Kevin Marshall was fastest in 29min 58 s, followed by Dan Reynolds (31min 37s), David Andrews (32min 11s) and Geoff Maidment (32min 31s).

Neil Rumbold (34min 58s) was just ahead of Ian Baines (35min 4s), with Michael Butterworth finishing in 36min 8s and John Smith in 37min 29s.

Jules Adams (37min 40s) was fastest female followed by Hayley Smith (38min 41s), John Hardy (38min 53s), Rory Hartley (39min 49s) and Lee Prowse (41min 43s).

Sharon White and Joseph Dilworth finished together in 41min 47s, with Sue Harrington finishing in 46min 29s and Jeanette Hartley in 46min 31s.

GFDR will be hosting the Felsted 10 km road race on July 8 – see club’s website for details.
