The travails a lower league goalkeeper faces playing at a third tier football club in west London, are not likely to steal the spotlight away from the never-ending torrent of trivia that is the Premier League soap opera.

But in ‘Graduation,’ Mr Lee has penned a interesting volume full of insight and anecdotes about overcoming the dreaded nerves - written from the sharp end of high pressure environments: professional sport.

Details include how he even got hypnotised to help him cope with potentially crippling match-day stress.

A number of other techniques are laid out for the reader by a man who honestly admits he is personally familiar with the fear of ‘choking.’

Given that the mistakes Mr Lee makes as a goalie will usually be fatal and thousands of people in grounds will instantly cast judgement, being able to cope well with pressure is a massively important skill to learn – and which he shares with the reader.

So Graduation is quite a contrast from the efforts many footballers churn out to turn a quick buck, and which could easily be retitled: ‘My Amazing Career,’ and in which illuminating details are as hard to find as transparency is at FIFA.

But for Mr Lee, football is a game played between the ears; subverting a view of footballers as inflated pig bladder kickers who would struggle to get out of their mansion without a retinue of club staff to point to the exit.

For helping to bust that stereotype and for his tips on dealing with pressure he learned at the sharp end, Richard Lee is Londoner of the Day.
