Struggling Lillywhites ease relegation fears in Blue Square Bet South

» After four consecutive home draws, Bromley ground out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Weston-Super-Mare at Hayes Lane on Saturday to ease their relegation worries.

However, in keeping with their recent efforts, they made it hard for themselves after missing several chances in a game they dominated for long periods.

There was a chance at each end of the pitch in the opening minutes when Hakeem Araba headed Albert Jarrett’s cross into the arms of goalkeeper Lloyd Irish in the third minute before Weston’s Ben Kirk fired a free-kick narrowly over the bar.

Volleyed

Ali Fuseini volleyed just wide on 15 minutes from Jarrett’s knock down, and the winger saw his cross-come-shot gathered by the goalkeeper a few minutes later.

A poor clearance from a defender fell at Fuseini’s feet just inside the penalty area after 30 minutes, but his low, placed shot was finger tipped around the post for a corner.

From the set-piece, Tutu Henriques headed over from just three yards out and, despite the home side being in control, the scoreline remained blank at the interval.

Weston-super-Mare began the second half in strong fashion and might have gone ahead in the 48th minute when slack marking allowed the ball to run through to Dayle Grubb only for him to fire over from six yards.

Wriggling

Bromley’s Anthony Thomas shot wide after wriggling his way into the penalty area before, moments later, the decisive goal finally came.

Fuseini – having received the ball from Pierre Joseph-Dubois – showed exceptional control under pressure from two defenders before coolly placing the ball across the goalkeeper into the far corner.

Bromley were denied a penalty after 73 minutes when Ben Cleverley appeared to handle Thomas’s cross, but the official remained motionless.

With five minutes remaining, Weston stepped up a gear. Substitute, Marcus Doherty should have done better with a first time shot that trickled through to Bromley goalkeeper Joe Welch and Danny Waldren was lucky to escape a red card when he brought down Grubb as the last man.

Henriques followed into the referee’s notebook in the last minute when he upended Sahr Kabba in full flight as win-shy Bromley appeared to lose their composure.

In a generous seven minutes of added on time, Weston put the hosts under immense pressure, forcing a number of corners and free-kicks in prominent positions.

From one such set-piece Hardwood did extremely well to clear Kirk’s header off the line with an overhead kick before, with almost the last kick of the match, Chris Young’s volley was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Welch to secure the vital points.

Bromley: Welch, Henriques, Patterson, Fuseini, Swaibu, Harwood, Joseph-Dubois, Waldren, Araba, Thomas (Malcolm, 82 mins), Jarrett (Jones, 78 mins). Subs not used: Taylor, Ibrahima, Williams.

n Beckenham Town recorded a 3-0 victory over fourth-placed Erith Town on Monday evening.

Goals from Jake Hobbs and Elstrom Die put them in control before half-time and Ben Slade completed the scoring two minutes from time. Becks were previously beaten 4-3 at Erith & Belvedere on Saturday.

They visit Woodstock Sports in the Kent League this weekend.
