Iker Casillas believes Tottenham’s Gareth Bale is one of the best players in Europe and wouldn’t be surprised to see Real Madrid smash their transfer record to take him to the Bernabeu.

Madrid are desperate to land Bale, who has reportedly informed Spurs of his desire to move to Spain.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is determined to keep hold of the Welshman, however, and could demand more than the world record £86m [€100m] fee that has been touted.

Club captain Casillas is a huge admirer of Bale and believes Madrid should do what it takes to sign him.

“We’re talking about a player who, frankly, is among the three or four best in Europe, and it is normal to talk about him,” the goalkeeper said in a press conference in Los Angeles.

“It’s normal that people talk about him because he has great qualities.

Asked if Madrid should spend £86m on Bale, Casillas added: “That’s how the market is.

“All signings are controversial for better or for worse, but we are talking about a decisive and very good player.

“Before the transfer window closes I’m sure there are could be some activity.”
