Chris Powell has commended Charlton midfielder Dale Stephens for his return to the side against Crystal Palace after missing out on a transfer to Aston Villa.

The 22-year-old was close to joining Premier League side Villa on transfer deadline day but the move fell through when the two clubs failed to agree a fee.

Stephens was left out of the Charlton squad to face Nottingham Forest the day after the deadline but performed well on his return to the starting line-up in their 1-0 loss to south London rivals Crystal Palace on Friday night.

“I thought he did very well, especially with regards to all the speculation with what was going on just before the close of the transfer window,” said Powell.

When asked about Stephens’ attitude in training, Powell added: “[It’s been] spot on.

“I’m sure he was disappointed with missing out on the chance of possibly going to the Premier League but he’s been first class.

“He’s trained very well, he’s got back into the group and he’s fine.

“I’ve said to him: ‘The only way you can improve and make people look at you is to keep playing well.’”
