Lethargic Lions mauled by Wolves as home woe continues

Millwall lost their fourth consecutive home game as relegation threatened Wolverhampton Wanderers claimed a comfortable win.

Wolves had not won in 13 games but they were good value for their win against a Lions side that were second-best for the majority of the match.

Millwall have a young side for this campaign, with the average age of the 14 that were on the field being a shade under 25-and-a-half.

It appears that some of those players have run out of gas after a hard season and are struggling to replenish their tanks.

The visitors took the lead after 10 minutes when David Edwards smashed the ball home.

But Sylvain Ebanks-Blake scored a contender for goal of the season when his overhead kick flew into the net on the hour mark.

Wolves nearly took the lead inside the first 70 seconds as Bakary Sako’s corner nearly went straight in but David Forde was on hand to clear the ball.

And they took the lead after 10 minutes when the Lions’ defence fell asleep and Sylvain Ebanks-Blakes’ cross was smashed home by Edwards.

Benik Afobe had picked up a knock earlier on and it was curtains for his evening after 12 minutes as he was forced to hobble off and was replaced by Andy Keogh.

The Lions were sluggish for the majority of the first-half and only showed what they were capable of in the latter stages.

The closest they came was when Shane Lowry headed Josh Wright’s corner but Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme was on hand to block the shot.

The Lions looked to claw their way back into the game after half-time but on the hour mark were dealt a fatal blow.

A ball into the box was only partially cleared by Beevers and Jamie O’Hara headed the ball back into the mixer.

Ebanks-Blake attempted the spectacular overhead kick and it paid off, leaving Forde with no chance and silenced the home faithful.

Only Tottenham loanee Adam Smith tested Ikeme in the final half-an-hour but his shot from a narrow angle was blocked by the stopper.

That was their only chance of note and the Millwall fans booed their players off once again.
