Millwall midfielder left fuming with officials after Leeds loss

Millwall midfielder Josh Wright was left fuming with the match officials after the Lions were beaten 1-0 at home to Leeds on Saturday.

Ross McCormack scored the only goal of the game midway through the second half but the south Londoners were left feeling aggrieved after they felt three key decisions over an eight minute spell went against them.

Millwall felt they should have had a penalty on the hour mark when James Henry went down under pressure from Darren O’Dea but the referee, Lee Probert, booked the Lions winger for simulation.

“The referee’s gone to give it,” Wright told London24. “I’m right next to him and he’s put his whistle to his mouth and about to point to the spot and for some odd reason the linesman’s been able to change his mind.

“I don’t know why. I don’t know how the linesman can overrule the referee.

“The ref is the main man on the pitch.”

Moments later the Lions had another claim for a spot kick when the ball appeared to strike Adam Bruce’s arm.

“[It was] blatant handball,” Wright claimed. “If the referee gives it he [Bruce] is sent off as well and then who knows what happens in football. We could have gone on to win it.”

The Yorkshire club went down the other end to score the eventual winner through McCormack, but less than 80 seconds after the goal, Millwall were awarded a penalty after Bruce brought down Andy Keogh, however Harry Kane had fired the loose ball home and Wright felt the equaliser should have been given.

“For the actual penalty when he did give it, we scored at the same time,” he said. “Our luck was completely against us today.

“You need luck in football. It’s surely got to turn for us.”

Leeds held onto their goal advantage to claim the win, inflicting a fourth straight home defeat on Millwall, who have not won at home in the league since Boxing Day – a run of seven games.

“It’s very frustrating,” Wright added. “I suppose it’s football but it’s even more frustrating when a couple of decisions don’t go your way.

“It’s hard to take when we’ve played well and battled well. It’s football. We’ve got to lift ourselves for the next one.”
