Maik Taylor, who completed his move from Leeds this week, wants to emulate Brad Friedel

Millwall’s new signing Maik Taylor is hoping to emulate Tottenham star Brad Friedel by playing well into his 40s.

The veteran goalkeeper will officially become a Lions player this week and he intends to carry on playing for a while yet.

“I feel as fit as ever,” he confirmed, “and I am determined to keep playing for as long as I can,” he told the club’s official site.

“There are a number of keepers still playing at the top level into their forties, with Brad Friedel, who is older than me, prime amongst them.

“My body feels good, I’m still able to train as hard as ever and I love playing so I’m delighted to have the chance to continue my career at Millwall.”

Despite six clean sheets last season, since making a move from Leeds in March, the goalkeeper is not taking his spot for granted at The Den.

“When we start in pre-season I’ll be battling for the number one jersey with David Forde and maybe another keeper.

“If I’m in the side that will be great, but if not I’ll be both supporting and putting pressure on whoever is in the team.

We had a very encouraging end to last season and of course we will come back full of optimism ready for the new campaign.

“But at the same time, I expect the Championship to be even more competitive than ever, which is why it’s an exciting league to play in.”
