QPR manager Harry Redknapp was a disappointed man after suffering his first defeat as R’s boss at the hands of Newcastle.

Shola Ameobi struck with nine minutes remaining to condemn the R’s to defeat, although Reading’s late defeat at Manchester City ensures that they are not spending Christmas Day at the bottom of the Premier League.

He said: “I thought we were going to hang on and nick a draw. I couldn’t see us winning, but we just couldn’t see it through.

“I thought we could hang on for a good point to keep us going, but it just wasn’t to be.”
