THERE were an impressive 11 championship best performances recorded at the recent annual Suffolk County Athletics Championships, held at the West Suffolk Arena in Bury St Edmunds.

Alex Baxter led the way in the youngest age group. The Hadleigh High School pupil, a member of Hadleigh Hares, clocked a best of 5mins 03.9secs in the Under-13 boys’ 1,500m.

Thomas Harwood, of Royal Hospital School, set a championship best in the under-15 boys’ 300m (43.0secs), while talented thrower Harry Hughes, of West Suffolk AC, launched the javelin to a fantastic championship landmark of 59.97m in the same age group.

Ipswich Harriers’ Errol Thompson equalled the championship best with a clearance of 1.90m in the Under-17 men’s high jump, having earlier won a very competitive 100m in 11.7secs. Just eight-tenths of a second separated all seven runners in this race.

Kieran Clements, of Ipswich Harriers, re-wrote the event’s record books in the Under-20 men’s 3,000m, thanks to a scorching time of 8:28.5.

In the same age group, the highly-rated Matti Mortimer hurled the javelin out to an eye-catching championship best of 65.69m.

At the other end of the age scale, Nella Walters, a pupil at Culford School and a member of West Suffolk AC, registered a new championship best of 5:02.8 in the Under-13 girls’ 1,500m.
