Chelsea’s interim manager Rafael Benitez rued the chance of closing the gap to Manchester City and leaving Tottenham with a chance to overtake them with a win at West Ham.

Goals from Yaya Toure and Carlos Tevez gave the Citizens the victory over the west Londoners.

“It’s always disappointing when you lose, it’s a painful defeat,” said the Spainiard.

“We are disappointed, we could have been closer (to Manchester City), but we will not have to fight for the top four.”

If Spurs beat West Ham United tomorrow, they will leap-frog over the Blues into third place.

And with Arsenal breathing down their necks, not even fourth place can be assumed anymore for the outfit from SW6.

“We knew we could be closer,” he reiterated.

“We will try to win more games - Arsenal and Spurs are close,” he admitted.
