The Blues’ Olympians will need time to recover after the tournament
Chelsea star Juan Mata could miss the opening games of next season because of his London 2012 Olympics commitments and others are likely to be out for a similar period.
The Spaniard has been given a three week holiday after Euro 2012 but will be training with the Spain Olympic team ahead of the Games.
“We will have to see with Mata, because he was at the European Championships as well,” Di Matteo said.
“How long we give him off depends when then go out of the Olympics and how he feels physically and mentally.
“It is not ideal, but there will be many clubs in the same situation as us.”
Other players who could also miss the start of the season include Oriol Romeu, David Luiz, Ryan Bertrand and Daniel Sturridge, should he recover from meningitis to take his place in Team GB’s side.
