Raul Meireles has revealed former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt was influential in his decision to leave Chelsea for Fenerbahce in the summer.

Kuyt joined Fenerbahce in June, three months before Meireles, meaning they are team-mates for the second time in their careers having spent a season together at Anfield two years ago.

“I spoke with Kuyt after receiving an offer,” Portuguese midfielder Meireles told Lig TV, as quoted on Turkish-Football.com.

“He told me a lot of good things about Fenerbahce,” he continued.

“Also the Portuguese players who play in Turkey told me that Istanbul is amazing, which made it easier to accept the offer.”

“My kids studied in the same school in Liverpool as Kuyt’s children and now they study in the same school in Istanbul which is nice.”
