Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has been charged by the FA relating to his comments on Twitter.

The alleged comments were made in reference to Chelsea full back Ashley Cole.

The Blues left back defended John Terry in court after his captain was charged over an alleged racial slur towards QPR defender Anton Ferdinand – Terry was cleared of all charges.

“The FA has today charged Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand with improper conduct in relation to comments posted on Twitter,” an FA statement read.

“The allegation is that the player acted in a way which was improper and/or bought the game into disrepute by making comments which included a reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race.

“Ferdinand has until 4pm on August 2 2012 to respond to the charge.”
