Frank Lampard insisted his late penalty rescue mission was a good night’s work as England drew 1-1 with Ukraine at Wembley.

The Three Lions were disappointing but saw Jermaine Defoe’s first half goal disallowed for foul from the Spurs striker.

They then fell behind to an unstoppable strike from ?? just before the break and it took until the 86th minute until Lampard got his chance from the spot.

But with a grandstand finish set up, captain Steven Gerrard was shown a second yellow card and given his marching orders.

Lampard, who finished the game wearing the armband, told ITV: “These games are not easy and in the end getting a point is a good result considering we were 1-0 down with 10 minutes to go.

“At the start of the game you obviously want to win it but when you consider the circumstances we had a goal disallowed, we hit the post, so in the end we showed great character to get a point.”

But Lampard did admit that Defoe’s early goal should not have been chalked off. “I thought he (the referee) pulled it back for a free-kick to us. It wasn’t a foul at all so we’ve very disappointed with that.”
