Steven Gerrard still believes that John Terry is a leader

Liverpool star Steven Gerrard has hailed Chelsea defender John Terry as a leader in the squad, even though the Blues man is no longer wearing the captain’s armband.

Terry was stripped of the captaincy after he faced a court date after Euro 2012, charged over an alleged racial slur towards QPR defender Anton Ferdinand – the 31-year-old denies the charges.

“It’s not just about one captain in this squad,” the Liverpool midfielder said.

“We’ve got a lot of leaders and fantastic people around the set-up, and the reason we’re doing so well is because everyone is pulling in the right direction and leading by example.

“John has been a big part of that.

“His performances have been superb and we’ll certainly need another tomorrow night.”

Terry has been in excellent form for the Three Lions at Euro 2012 and produced a spectacular clearance against Ukraine –although replays suggested that the ball had crossed the line before the former skipper cleared it.

The incident, however, should have been avoided as Artem Milevskiy was offside in the build-up.
