Stewart Downing wants revenge for Middlesbrough’s 1997 cup final defeat
Stewart Downing has admitted that he hates Roberto Di Matteo after the Italian’s record-breaking strike put Chelsea on their way to victory over his beloved Middlesbrough in the 1997 FA Cup final.
The Blues’ current interim head coach netted after just 42 seconds in a game the west Londoners went on to win 2-0.
Downing looks set to start in tomorrow’s final for Liverpool and is desperate to win to make up for past heartbreak.
“I’ve hated him ever since!” Downing told the Daily Mail.
“We had got tickets off the club, who took us and our families down on the coach. It was a good day out but with bad memories of the final.
“What did I call him at the time? Nothing I could really repeat!”
