Mata urges Chelsea team-mate Torres not to worry about Spain snub

Juan Mata has told Fernando Torres to concentrate on Chelsea after he was overlooked for the Spain squad to face Panama this week.

Torres has hit seven goals for the Blues this season, but only one in his last six games.

However, Mata is confident the former Liverpool striker will be back in Spain boss Vicente Del Bosque’s squad next time around.

“I’m sure he’ll be selected next time,” Mata is quoted as saying in Marca.

“He needs to be calm. He is playing well, getting a lot of minutes, enjoying games and that’s the most important thing for him.”

“There are a lot of games in a season and the most important thing is to be calm and do well at your club,” he added.

Mata can sympathise with his team-mate having been left out of Spain’s last squad himself.

The 24-year-old was delighted to be recalled this week, however, and thinks his performances this season justify his inclusion.

“Not being in the last squad was not good news,” he said.

“Every Spanish player feels happy when they are called up by the coach.

“For me, being selected is a reason to be happy and not being selected is a reason to be sad.”

“Personally I think I’m having a good season even though it’s only just started.”
