Video: Why Chelsea should fear their former wing wizard

If Bayern Munich are to defeat Chelsea on their own turf in the Champions League final this Saturday night, they will have to rely on Arjen Robben to put in a career-defining performance.

Jupp Heynckes’s team must dust themselves down from the humiliating 5-2 defeat at the hands of Borussia Dortmund in the German cup final last weekend and attack from the off against a Chelsea defence missing key players in the forms of Branislav Ivanović and John Terry.

There are few players in the world better primed to exploit these absences than Robben, a league title victor in four different countries but never yet a recipient of the European cup winner’s medal.

Now in his prime at the age of 28, Robben’s goal tally this season is an impressive 19 from 35 games, more the form of a striker than a winger. Yet his ability to cut in from the right flank and shoot from distance with his trusty left foot, as well as his well-renowned speed which enables him to get in behind the defence, has meant his ability to find the back of the net is one of the most crucial facets to his game. His crossing ability is excellent and he has a ready-made target to aim for in the form of Mario Gomez.

Robben has already overcome Real Madrid, another of his former clubs, in the semi-final and is aiming to go one better against the club who plucked him from Dutch football in 2004. While he will start on the right against arguably the world’s top left back, Ashley Cole, it is perhaps when he switches wings with Franck Ribery and attacks Jose Bosingwa- for many Chelsea’s weak link- where Robben may get a lot of joy.

In front of their own fans, away from other distractions, and with Robben, who recently extended his contract until 2015, at the heart of their attacking play, Bayern will never have a better chance of attaining European glory.
