The all rounder believes he is unlikely to play for England in his career

Essex all rounder Graham Napier has admitted he is unlikely to play for England but would still love the opportunity to represent his country.

The 32-year-old was a part of England’s 2009 Twenty20 World Cup squad that failed to make the semi finals, but he failed to make an appearance and he is not expecting a call from the selectors any time soon.

“I think realistically England are not looking to sign up a 32-year-old,” he told London24. “If an opportunity came up then I wouldn’t turn it down.”

The all rounder is fully focused on the upcoming campaign for his county, for whom he has been awarded a benefit after 15 years of service.

The 32-year-old made his debut in 1997 and has gone on to make 111 First Class appearances averaging a shade over 31 with the bat and just under 37 with the ball.

“To be awarded a benefit was one of the things I set my sights on when I started playing for Essex,” he said.

“I’ve won a few trophies over the years and to be awarded a benefit is a great honour.”

The all rounder’s benefit year features several events over the course of 2012 after a Valentine’s Ball in February and the Boundary Club Dinner at the end of March.

“The nearest event we’ve got coming up is a bowl-out at Broadgate on April 12,” he revealed.

“We’re inviting anyone to come along and have a bowl at myself in the net.

“We’ve got a day at the HAC, London playing against the Bunburys on May 31. It’s a long lunch.”

The all rounder also believes that his county can achieve promotion back to Division One this campaign.

“I think the new season is an exciting prospect for us,” he said. “We’ve made some new signings and we have some very exciting players with a lot of youngsters through from our junior ranks.

“It makes for an exciting summer.”
