Essex all rounder Graham Napier is celebrating his benefit year by inviting members of the public to come and bowl at him and his county team-mates tommorow [April 12].

The event, ‘Broadgate Bowlout’, takes place in Broadgate Circle, near Liverpool Street station and the 32-year-old will be there from 11am coaching children from a school in Bethnal Green and one in Chelmsford.

“We’re inviting anyone to come along and have a bowl at myself and, hopefully, some of my team-mates in the net,” Napier told London24.

“One of the committee members came up with the idea and we found a company who provided the inflatable net.

“We’re hoping to get adults back into cricket and should anyone get one of us out then they will win a prize thanks to sponsors [preserve company] Tiptree”

Napier is known for his big hitting and achieved a score of 152 off 58 balls against Sussex at Chelmsford with a record 16 sixes.

In May 2011 the all rounder smashed another 16 sixes out of his total of 196 against Surrey at Guildford – equalling the record for sixes hit in a first-class innings.

Essex won their first game against Gloucestershire by an innings and 38 runs with Napier claiming 5-58 in the second innings.

“We’re on the right track,” he added. “It was pleasing to get a five-fer as they don’t come along too often in a career.

“Billy Godleman played a match winning innings of 130 in our total of 364.

“I thought 400 would be a good score but it proved to be more than good enough”

Money raised from the benefit year will support two charities.

The first is the PCA Benevolent Fund which helps current and former players in times of hardship and the Royal British Legion who provide welfare to the whole of Armed Forces family.
