The Eagles boss was delighted with his young side

Crystal Palace manager Dougie Freedman hailed his young side after they delayed Reading’s confirmation as Championship champions by a couple of hours.

Wilfried Zaha gave the Eagles the lead before Kaspars Gorkss equalised for the Royals.

Jason Roberts was sent off just before half time and although Adam Le Fondre gave the Premier League bound side the lead, Glenn Murray levelled the scores to force Reading to wait for their title triumph.

But it came only a few hours later as Middlesbrough beat Southampton.

“I think our young lads performed very well and if it was a difficult game for them then they have learned from it.

“I thought they handled the situation well. We are going through a little bit of a bad spell with injuries but the young players stepped up and I am so proud of the way they played.

“In that game you had one team that’s going to the Premiership and one that aspires to.

“Reading had one chance in the second half and took it but we have to learn from things like that. We want to be where Reading are.”

Roberts was sent off after referee Andy D’Urso deemed that he had deliberately elbowed Jonathan Parr but Freedman wasn’t sure if it was intentional.

“I know Jason Roberts and he isn’t that sort of player,” he added. “Maybe his arm caught our lad but I am not got to sit here and make judgments.

“Referees need to know whether or not it was intentional.”
