Brentford midfielder Jonathan Douglas is doubtful for their Easter Monday trip to Hartlepool after he limped off in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Bury.

The former Republic of Ireland international has been an ever-present in the Bees’ League One line-up since moving from Swindon last summer, but an ankle injury looks likely to end that run.

Douglas was clattered by Bury midfielder Steven Schumacher and had to go off just after Sam Saunders had netted his second goal of the game to put the Bees 2-0 up, with Shaleum Logan adding a third soon afterwards.

The result kept Brentford in the hunt for a play-off place, but coach Alan Kernaghan admitted he felt Schumacher’s challenge had deserved a red card rather than the booking he received.

“I thought they were a bit over-zealous at times, with Dougie’s tackle, but I don’t think there’s any point in complaining about it now,” Kernaghan said afterwards.

“Fingers crossed it’s not too bad and hopefully he’ll be all right. There’s a lot to do for Monday, but we’ve had a tough schedule, done well in terms of results and we want to push on.

“In the first half we were a bit off the pace, but we got the goal and that knocked the stuffing out of them. From then on we looked comfortable and they didn’t cause us too many problems.

“I saw Hartlepool [in their 1-1 draw at Colchester] on Friday and they’re a decent footballing team but, if we play the way we can do, I think there’s three points to be had.”

Brentford’s victory was their fifth in succession, leaving them just three points behind sixth-placed Carlisle in the chase for the play-offs, although they have played a game more.

However, the Hartlepool game on Monday (kick-off 3pm) is immediately followed by crunch clashes with two other play-off rivals, Notts County and Stevenage.
