Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that he wants to keep striker Joel Campbell in and around the Gunners first team this season.

The Costa Rica international, who was mightily impressive at the World Cup over the summer, has enjoyed successful loan spells away from the Emirates over the past few seasons.

Wenger now feels the 22-year-old is ready to fight for his place in north London and wants to give him that opportunity.

Club’s such as Galatasaray and Atletico Madrid are rumoured to want the forward on loan but with just Olivier Giroud and Yaya Sanogo as the out-and-out strikers in the Gunners squad, Wenger wants Campbell to stay.

“He has come from a non-competitive world to a world with hyper-competition,” Wenger told the club’s official site.

“He has adapted slowly, but has adapted very well, he has a very good spirit and attitude.

“He is a member of my squad at the moment, He had a good preparation and played well against Benfica.

“In training he is very focused and eager to do well. I would like to keep him.”
