Arsenal star: We don’t need new signings, we need to keep fit

Mikel Arteta believes that staying injury free is more important than new signings

Arsenal star Mikel Arteta believes that Arsenal could compete for honours with the side they have now, if they had a fully-fit squad.

The Gunners have had numerous injury problems this season, especially at full back, with Bacary Sagna, Kieran Gibbs and Andre Santos all missing games, while midfield star Jack Wilshere has not played this season.

“We have been hit with important, long-term injuries the whole season that really, really affect the team,” Arteta said in Sport Magazine.

“I would like to see this team playing with the same XI for 10-15 games - then we could talk about if we were good enough or not.

“Now we are starting to do it and we are starting to get really good results, so for me the biggest concern is to stop the injuries.”

The north Londoners are interested in signing Lukas Podolski but Arteta feels that new signings are not as important as keeping the squad injury free.

He added: “Obviously if you spend a lot of money to bring in top players you have a better chance because you have a bigger squad and you can change the team around but, for me, a key thing with our squad is the injuries.”

Arsenal travel to QPR tomorrow where they will be looking for an eighth consecutive league victory.
