Transfer news: Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre is confident the club can repel any further offers from Arsenal for star striker Luis Suarez.

The Gunners have already had a £30million bid rejected by the Merseyside club for the wantaway Uruguayan, who originally courted a move to Real Madrid, citing a media witch-hunt in Britain, but then claimed he wants to play Champions League football.

Chelsea have been also linked to the 30-goal hitman but that interest may subside now that they have set their sights on Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney, already having a £10million bid today rejected by the Premier League champions.

The Reds are currently on their pre-season tour of Australia and Ayre expects Suarez to feature.

“Our expectation is he’ll be pulling on a shirt for Liverpool and carrying on with his contract,” the Anfield supremo said.

Nothing short of a £40million bid would be enough to even tempt Liverpool in to a negotiation and Ayre confirmed that Arsenal have not upped their offer.

He told Australia’s ABC Grandstand: “We’ve been pretty consistent on Luis. He has made some comments in the media, we’ve made it clear it’s not our intention to sell him, he has three years left on his contract.

“We did have an offer, only one offer from Arsenal. We rejected that offer and they haven’t made a subsequent bid.

“As far as we’re concerned he remains our player and it’s always more difficult when players are off on international duty and not in the fold.

“But he’ll be back with us, joining us in Melbourne for the tour and hopefully once he gets back, between myself and [manager Brendan Rogers] we can settle him down and focus him on the season ahead.”
