Wenger: Arsenal can still challenge for the title

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger still believes the Gunners can challenge the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea for the title, despite dropping more points against Fulham.

The Gunners surrendered a two-goal lead in Saturday’s remarkable 3-3 draw with the Cottagers, leaving them eighth in the table and a whopping 11 points behind leaders United.

But despite their inconsistent start to the season, Wenger has refused to rule out a title challenge.

When asked if his side could still have a say in the title race, he said: “Of course, yes, why not?”

Mikel Arteta had a golden chance to plunder three points for Arsenal on Saturday, but Mark Schwarzer was equal to his injury time penalty.

“If we had scored the penalty, nobody speaks about it,” said Wenger.

“You had some dodgy moments in the game, but you would have won. We were close to doing it and have to do it next game.

“We had come through three difficult games, especially the first two,” he continued, referring to the 2-1 defeat against Manchester United and the 2-2 Champions League draw at Schalke.

“We had to recover from the United game and then we gave it all in Germany.

“All of us were disappointed not to beat Fulham because we had the chances to do that and in the end we were frustrated, but there were many positives to take from the game.

“Our performances are not as big a disaster as some people like to portray them and I still have great belief in this team.”
